...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngMeet Elisabeth Bakker, a 17th-century Dutch woman who was skilled in the art of domestic alchemy. As a middle-class housewife, Elisabeth’s kitchen was her laboratory. Some of her experiments included distilling floral waters, making medicines, and even dyeing her husband's beard with burnt walnuts. Elisabeth Bakker is also fictional, but stay with me on this. She learned these skills from her mother, who taught her how to assess the quality of ingredients at their local market and also how to use tools like mortars, pestles, and alembics. Although Elisabeth's work, like that of many women in her era, was often overlooked, her experiments with chemistry were vital to her household's well-being and foreshadowed the development of modern chemistry. This story comes from the biography of the fictional Elisabeth Bakker which was created from the historical sources we have about the lives of women living in the Dutch Republic during the 17th century. It aims to provide readers with an understanding of the experiences and contributions of middle-class women to the history of early chemistry, despite the absence of archival materials commonly used to tell the story of an individual life. Tap the link in bio to read Elisabeth Bakker’s full biography. Pictured: A woman sitting in the foreground of An Alchemist and His Family painted by the Dutch artist Thomas Wyck (1616–1677).
...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngWinter blues 🥶, begone! Spring has sprung! 🌞 This illustration depicts the beginning of a stream from the 1899 volume Princess & Fairy, or The Wonders of Nature. Through the personas of a princess and a fairy, the volume explains different so-called "wonders of nature" to young readers, including insects, several varieties of flowers, snow crystals, metals, and clouds. 🚣Tap the link in bio to see more from this book!

...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngSlainte! Happy St. Patrick's Day!🍀 This clover illustration is from The Vertuose Boke of Distyllacyon of the Waters of all Maner of Herbes (1528). The word slainte means “health” in Irish and is a salute said before consuming a drink with another person to wish good health to that person or persons. This book lists clover (or trifolium) as having medicinal properties which are being studied to this day.
...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngHappy #WomensHistoryMonth 💪💜 Today we’re tagging local museums to share a women’s history fact! Academy of Natural Sciences @acadnatsci, women have always wanted to control their own fertility, but did you know that some women in the early 20th century opted to use devices like the gold pessary for their method of contraception? A pessary was a type of early intrauterine device (IUD) also known as a cervicouterine device. It was designed with a curved disk and a long coil stem attached to the plate of the disk. The coil opens into a wishbone shape with two arms that are held together during insertion. Made of a gold-plated metal due to its biocompatibility, it may also have been made with brass. Over time, we’ve seen amazing advancements in reproductive health, leading to more reliable choices like hormonal birth control and modern IUDs. It’s inspiring to see how the resilience of women seeking safe and accessible healthcare treatments in the past continues to resonate with women today. 👩‍⚕️You can learn more about the history and science behind women’s healthcare products by visiting our latest ExhibitLab: Consuming Women’s Healthcare. Come and visit us next week as our free museum will reopen its doors on Wednesday, March 19th! Tap the link in bio!
...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngHappy 292nd birthday Joseph Priestley! 🎉 This portrait comes from the 1983 American postage stamps commemorating Joseph Priestley. One of the 18th century’s most preeminent experimental scientists, Priestley is best remembered for discovering oxygen. 🌬️ Tap the link in bio to read his biography on our website!
