data:[...] Base64“This is the most beautiful thing in the world!” #WHOI biologist Francesco Ventura filmed these black-browed albatross on New Island, Falkland Islands, home to 15,000 breeding pairs. 🪶The pair seen here are “allopreening” or gently preening each other– a common behavior when reuniting after a long foraging trip. As part of a long-term, 400-nest study, Ventura said these two have been “married” for around two decades. “This behavior was found to lower the stress on both partners, and in some cases it was found to help with removal of parasites,” Ventura says. “To be honest, I think they are cuddling and just genuinely feeling good about seeing each other.” 🤔 Do you see any parallels in human relationships? Share your “allopreening” tips in the comments! 📹 courtesy of Francesco Ventura
data:[...] Base64📉 Antarctic sea ice shrank to the second-lowest level on record in 2024, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. #WHOI’s Catherine Walker and fellow climate scientists weigh in on the three-year downward trend– and why it’s so hard to tell if it's a permanent shift. Dig into the complexities with @newscientist (link in bio)! 📸 of Weddell seals resting on sea ice by Dan Lowenstein © Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
data:[...] Base64Underwater, sound travels further than light, but its speed changes with temperature, pressure, and salinity levels. Scientists take advantage of these changing properties to measure the density of fish and other "biomass" in the mid-ocean twilight zone... with acoustic technology! 📲 Drift over to the link in our profile to find out how the #WHOI-developed Deep-See towed system helps us understand life in the ocean. 📸 from a 2018 research cruise aboard the NOAA ship Henry B. data:[...] Base64For sea #scallops, underwater pile-driving isn’t just loud, it’s exhausting 😮‍💨! New research from WHOI’s Sensory Biology Lab is exploring how one of New England’s most-treasured #shellfish expends energy when stressed– and if construction techniques might be able to give them a break. 📲 Read the Oceanus story at the link in our profile! 📸 by Chris Bartlett, @maineseagrant
data:[...] Base64😲 #ROVJason may look the same as always, but underneath its cool blue and yellow exterior is a special foam that will allow it to descend to its full depth rating of 6,500 meters (4 miles). Over the winter, the Jason team took the vehicle down to its aluminum frame, then attached the foam so that it would be able to flex under the immense pressure of the deep sea. This #NSFfunded upgrade builds on the success of the most recent overhaul of #HOVAlvin, which enabled the human-occupied submersible to reach similar depths. Jason’s full overhaul also included custom-made thrusters and motor controllers to replace its obsolete propulsion system. 🚢 After tests at the WHOI dock last week, Jason shipped out for San Diego to join a research cruise aboard the R/V Roger Revelle. The remotely-occupied vehicle’s first operation will be the Origin and Evolution of Intraplate Magmatism at the Revillagigedo Archipelago. 📸 by Hannah Piecuch © #WHOI #DiveDeeper @nsfgov
data:[...] Base64🌊 Did you know 43% of Massachusetts residents live in a coastal community? #WHOI researchers are working to help protect the future of coastal communities with the creation of a low-cost water level sensor. Two prototypes are currently being tested alongside NOAA tidal gauges. Once they're ready for prime time, the data will be publicly available to help cities and towns plan with resiliency planning. 📲 Learn more from @wcai_npr at the link in bio!
