...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngThis week’s #craftfocus is dry stone walling. Dry stone walling is the building of walls and structures without the use of cement or mortar. The skills stretch back over three millennia and include places like Skara Brae and the brochs in Scotland. Dry stone walls are common in upland areas of Britain where stone is much nearer the surface and soils thinner. Many of the skills used by early wallers are still recognised and used today. The skill of the waller is being able to use the local stone to its best advantage. Today dry stone walling is prospering with an upsurge in interest in the environmental value of walls and the growth in prestigious garden, landscape and artistic projects. Stones are placed lengthways into the wall to provide strength. Large stones are used for the base and the middle is filled with smaller stone as the wall goes up. Most walls have throughstones placed about half way up which tie both sides of the wall together and add strength to the structure. The profile of a wall is like a capital letter ‘A’, tapering towards the top. The wall is finished off with coping stones which can be done in a variety of styles and protect the wall from livestock and decay. Most walls are built using the same basic techniques, but it is the type of stone used that provides their distinctive appearance. Some areas of the country offer different styles of building due to the nature of the stone, for example in far north of Scotland where some walls are built with large, single boulders and no small filling. ...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngThis week’s #mondaymaker is Harriet Page @hareinthechair , an upholsterer who aims to restore and create heirlooms for the future, using natural and biodegradable materials. Harriet uses traditional upholstery techniques, keeping furniture out of landfill and giving them a new lease of life, seeking to bring items back to their full potential through a collaborative process with clients. ...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngThis week’s #craftfocus is brick making. Brick clay, having been dug from the selected ground and tested for suitability, is picked clear of unwanted matter and then mixed to the right consistency for brick making. The clay is then thrown into wooden moulds to form the shape of the brick. When moulding a brick, it is vital that no air is trapped inside the clay. Excess clay is removed by running over the mould with a wire. The moulds were traditionally turned out onto barrows and taken to a flat, south-facing field and laid out to dry for two days and two nights, being turned during that time to assist initial drying. They were then turned again on edge and stacked in rows, one on top of the other, to dry for a period usually extending between one and three months depending on the weather and time of year. When deemed dry enough, the bricks are fettled and stacked to form a kiln in order to bake them. Flues are set into the kiln and fuel is then prepared (usually timber) or in Ireland, turf (peat), is used. The fires are lit and the bricks are “burnt” in kilns containing between 800 and 1,000 pieces. The firing usually takes 2-3 days. The kilns are then allowed to cool naturally. After two days, cooling can be dismantled and the bricks sorted and stacked. The colour of the brick is determined by the chemical composition of the clay, the fuel used for firing and oxygen levels available during this process. Iron oxide gives the brick a red colour, very high levels of iron oxide give a blue colour, limestone and chalk added to iron gives a buff/yellow colour, magnesium dioxide gives a deep blue colour, and no iron or other oxides gives a white colour. Brick making is currently listed as endangered on our crafts list. Threats to its viability include a diminishing supply of raw materials, the use of coal for firing (given the move towards low carbon energy) and market issues. Homemade bricks cost more than manufactured ones and the rise of imported foreign bricks used as facades (bricks cut into slices and applied to the front of concrete buildings) is reducing demand. ...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngOur #mondaymaker Annie Rennie @artisansilversmith is a silversmith and maille maker. Anna primarily uses the traditional silversmithing method of raising in her silverware, whereby one disc of silver is hammered and formed to create pieces that will last a lifetime. Coupled with this, Anna is also a maille maker - currently a critically endangered craft. You can catch her at craft events as well as mediaeval fairs where her maille making is quite popular. If you want to read an exclusive interview on Anna and her work, become a member of Heritage Crafts and read more in the members portal: https://www.heritagecrafts.org.uk/join-us/ #heritagecrafts #mondaymaker #silversmithing #maille #maillemaking
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngThis week’s #craftfocus is scissor making. The production of handmade scissors and shears requires various techniques. After scissors have been forged and hardened, the surface of the metal remains rough. To produce extremely smooth handles, blades undergo a process called flexible grinding. Different tools, belts and grinders of varying hardness are used to shape the steel and remove metal burrs. Scissor blades are curved, so they always make contact regardless of the position they’re in. This ensures a consistent amount of pressure to ensure an even and straight cut. It takes skill to marry two handmade blades together as they are never 100% the same. This is when master putter-togetherers work their magic with skillful tweaks to turn two blades into a pair of scissors. Scissor making is currenly listed as critically endangered on our crafts list. Threats include the globalisation of the cutlery and steel industries, shrinking the size of the craft. Artisanal producers commonly rely on making a high-end/niche products as the market for volume is saturated with mass producers of lower-quality scissors. Increased costs for materials, equipment and utilities have also strained the budgets of scissor makers. Another issue is a lack of formal training - all training is done in house and it takes up up to five years for an apprentice to learn scissor making. It can therefore be difficult to recruit apprentices and the scissors trade has an ageing workforce. Images: Ernest Wright @ernestwrightltd #heritagecrafts #craftfocus #scissormaking #metalwork
