...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngOn this day in 1873, over 60,000 people turned out across the city of Sydney to pay their respects at the first ‘public funeral’ in New South Wales. But who was it for? Hint: he was born at sea in 1790 and famously crossed the Blue Mountains in 1813. Any guesses? It’s William Charles Wentworth Wentworth was the colony’s leading political figure of the 1820s and 1830s, calling for representative government, trial by jury, freedom of the press and the abolition of transportation. Although he died in England on 20 March 1872, Wentworth requested that his body be buried in Australia. It took a year to bring the body back to New South Wales by sea, by which time the Parliament passed a resolution for Wentworth to be honoured - with the first public funeral. Over 2000 mourners attended the ceremony at St Andrew’s Cathedral on George Street. This tradition continues today where state services are offered to individuals whose achievements and contributions to NSW are recognised by the state.

Our open days are an opportunity for children and their families to get up close and personal with democracy. On 19 April over a thousand adults and children piled through the doors of Parliament House on Macquarie Street, filling the chambers and historic committee rooms with voices young and old. Our guests got a taste of democracy through voting booths run by @nswelections, mock committees, chamber tours, roving actors and more! Thank you to everyone who joined us on the day and to all of the staff at Parliament who made the day such a success. Didn’t make it this time, but want to find out about our future events?
