Der amerikanische Lichtplaner Richard Kelly (1910-1977) gliederte Licht für eine qualitative Lichtplanung in drei Kategorien: Licht zum Sehen („ambient luminescence“), zum Hinsehen („focal glow“) und zum Ansehen („play of brillants“). Diese Idee der Unterscheidung stellte er 1952 vor.
