data:[...] Base64🚨 Sewage pollution is a major pressure on the UK’s freshwaters, with freshwater biodiversity widely degraded by treated and untreated wastewater. Currently, water industry investment is overwhelmingly focused on upgrades to sewage infrastructure, mostly affecting the lower reaches of rivers. Sewage is just one of the many problems affecting our freshwaters, and simply cleaning up sewage in larger rivers will not automatically deliver the biodiversity improvements which we all want to see. At Freshwater Habitats Trust, we believe that a new approach is required, which harnesses water sector investment to address the multiple pressures on freshwaters across catchments and from source-to-sea. Read our full positioning statement on the impact of sewage pollution on freshwater habitats and species at the link in our bio. If you would like to join calls for the Government to clean up our waters, you can join the @marchforwater in London this Sunday, where thousands of people are marching to reclaim our right to clean water. #MarchForCleanWater #MarchForWater #FloodTheStreets #FreshwaterConservation #FreshwaterPollution #WaterPollution #FreshwaterHabitats #Pollution

Wetlands cover only around 6% of the Earth’s surface, but they are home to 40% of all known plant and animal species. We need to put water and wetlands at the heart of efforts to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework. data:[...] Base64🩸 Efforts to save the iconic Medicinal Leech from extinction have been boosted through our work with @zsllondonzoo. The number of Medicinal Leeches in Britain has declined dramatically, with only four main populations left in Britain. Their decline was initiated by the historical medical trade, and more recently they have faced threats such as land use change, wetland drainage and loss of grazing. Through the Medicinal Leech Recovery project, we are working to understand more about this elusive species and establish a breeding population. London Zoo have successfully bred over 40 young Medicinal Leeches, marking a huge conservation success for the species. We are now investigating opportunities to reintroduce some of the animals to sites across the country. Together, we hope to halt and reverse this decline to prevent this wonderful but misunderstood species from disappearing from our freshwater landscapes. data:[...] Base64🔬 We're using pioneering Environmental DNA techniques to monitor Great Crested Newts and other aquatic animals in key locations across England. Environmental DNA, or eDNA for short, is DNA that’s released into the water by plants and animals. We can analyse samples collected from ponds to see if Great Crested Newt have been present, and survey results can then be used to monitor the status and change of England’s population. This project is helping to build a national picture of the breeding locations for this protected species. Since 2018, the surveys have been funded by Defra and Natural England. data:[...] Base64Across England, ‘Responsible Authorities’ have been established to prepare Local Nature Recovery Strategies to halt and reverse species declines and habitat loss. They will collaborate with local partners and experts to decide what actions to improve the natural environment will be included in their strategies. 💧 However, small freshwaters are currently at risk of being excluded despite being critical for biodiversity. Small freshwater habitats such as ponds, headwater streams, springs, flushes, ditches and small wetlands are vital for the survival of freshwater wildlife. Despite their small sizes, ponds have been shown to collectively support a greater number of freshwater species than rivers and lakes, including higher numbers of rare and threatened species. Our new guidance [link in bio] contains advice on the best way to incorporate small freshwaters into Local Nature Recovery Strategies. #freshwater #freshwatercrisis #freshwaterconservation #freshwaterhabitats #freshwaterbiodiversity #freshwaterwildlife #smallfreshwaters
