The best thing about the denim business is all its people! 🤗 I may not be the biggest globetrotter. But I have visited both the US and Japan, which in each their own way can be said to be the home of denim and jeans. In San Francisco (on my honeymoon), I met up with Kiya from @selfedge and Lynn Downey in the @levis archive. In Tokyo, I had sushi and sake with Kiyo from @bigjohnjeans. In New York, I hung out with @andrew3sixteen. At fairs and events in Europe, I almost always meet Wouter from @longjohn_denimblog and Ruedi aka @swissjeansfreak, among others. In Amsterdam, I met @heddels_ founder Nick Coe in 2016 and managing editor David (@deshuck) the year later (I think). Wherever you travel as a denimhead, you’ll meet kindred spirits. Others who, like you, think that the coolest things on earth is a pair of worn-out jeans 🤓 Back home, I have the team at @brundcph and my colleagues at ONLY BRAND HOUSE. And from my own little “denim cave”, I hang out with @denimstrummer (via Slack) 🫶🏻 This week, I’m going to Sweden to visit my good friend Klas (@top_5_klas), who I got to know almost a decade ago. At that time, he lived in Amsterdam, but he has since moved home to Alingsås. The town which, by the way, is also home to what became @nudiejeans, which I visited for the first time in 2020 to interview the then co-owner Palle Stenberg. On Wednesday, Olof and Jonas from Göteborg Manufaktur are hosting an event where @tcbinoue will also stop by 🇸🇪🇯🇵🇩🇰 It almost feels like a family get-together 🥰

...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngCustomer: “Why do these jeans cost $400?!?” 😳 Clerk: “Because time is money” 🤓 Customer: “Okay,” she says, looking for the door ... 🏃🏼‍♀️ I’ve worked in denim retail for over 15 years and although the conversation above is fictional (and maybe a bit far-fetched—I’ll admit it), it’s a recurring theme that raises many questions for consumers. And I would guess that it’s probably one in ten (at the most) who actually asks. So why is it that some jeans cost several hundred dollars/euros, while others cost a tenth of that? One explanation is the time it takes to manufacture them. Especially when the denim is made on so-called ‘shuttle looms’. In other words, when it’s ‘selvedge denim’. Is selvedge denim that much better? Well, it depends on how we define what is “good”. My friend Simon (@simon.giuliani) from @candianidenim compares selvedge denim to a classic American ‘muscle car’. Is it “better” than a modern car? Objectively, the answer will be a clear no!
